Diveboard updates: Picture gallery, speedy explore and feed, improved search
by Ksso on September 17, 2012
We made quite a few updates last week, that we "forgot" to advertise. You may have seen them already but in case you havent, here's what you missed:Full speed aheadThe activity feed and explore had been a real performance challenge, and now they are faster than ever. Pages load in under 0.2 secs and dragging the explore map is super-smooth. Although we did not add functionalities, we did change the algorithm to select the shown spots on the map and now it's more filled than ever.
Picture galleryFor some time now we've been manually selecting pictures that rocks uploaded by divers on Diveboard. We now built a beautiful way to browse through them pinterest-style with the new gallery page. ...
Getting more bottom time with the same bottle - how to become less of an air hoag
by Ksso on August 28, 2012
I've always been an air hoag - and getting into underwater photography only made things worse. This is not really an issue by itself, it's a bit annoying but can be managed just fine as long as your DM has a long hose to his octopus so you don't force all the group back to shorten their dive time by half. This led me into situations where I remember in this dive in Thailand the DM simply chose to have me get back to the boat from -23m all by myself while he carried on the exploration with the others. Again no big deal (set aside security questions raised by such behavior). When I started the CMAS 3* training - that started to be more of an issue. Training included freediving rescue...

Diveboard feature updates : dive shop pages and new layout
by Ksso on July 17, 2012
This update has been pending for more than we'd have liked it to ... but it's a major rework and hence updating the tests took a long while. Anyways, it's finally there, putting us back in our weekly update schedule! This week we have :Dive shop pagesThey're like your personal logbook, only for dive shops. Each dive shop owner can claim their page on diveboard (~5000 have already been created) and customise it with a proper description and picture... and "typical" dives they are doing. The idea here is that dive shops will provide "templates" of the dive with a list of the common species you can encounter, maybe some pictures and notes. Users will be able in the near future to import...

Dive with comfort: the thermo-formed mouthpiece
by Ksso on July 07, 2012
If you have been diving a bit, you may have encountered that jaw muscles fatigue after a long dive where you've been biting that mouthpiece a bit too hard. This is even more common on rental regulators where I've experiences the most oddly shaped mouthpieces ever. Even since I got my own regs, and despite the overall comfort bump they brought me, I kept finding myself over-biting the mouthpiece to ensure it stays firmly in my mouth.I've heard about those thermoformed mouthpieces for a while and when I finally found one in my LDS (local dive shop) I grabbed it and took it for a spin ! I bought the only brand they had: "JAX from DrBrux" which was co-branded by Mares (?) (apparently DrBrux...

Make your own robotic submarine
by Ksso on May 30, 2012
Brainchild of Eric Stackpole, the OpenROV is an open-source platform for underwater robotic exploration. Built out of cheap parts, this is the first below-1000$ submarine - but without any compromise. Rated for 100m (330ft), featuring an HD camera and a 1.5hrs of running time thanks to its 8 C batteries, tethered to the surface through a 10Mb link, this tiny robot opens up plenty cool new perspectives for spending extra down-time once you've emptied your tank! Wether you want to use it to map a complex cave, or simply follow a fish to its nest or snag pictures of fellow scuba divers, the OpenROV is an incredible tool that's actually affordable ! Kits should be available later this summer...
Fish round up: the nudibranch that borrowed chlorophyl from its food
by Ksso on May 18, 2012
Wired had a cool piece one one of the divers's biggest crush : nudibranchs. If you're a diver, and even more if you're an (wannabe) underwater macro photographer - you know how beautiful and photogenic those babies can be. But it's not the colors or shape that we'll be interested on with Elysia chlorotica, but how it's using some genes and photosynthesizing organelles from the algae it's feeding on. As wired reports, Now it turns out that the slug has acquired enough stolen goods to make an entire plant chemical-making pathway work inside an animal body, says Sidney K. Pierce of the University of South Florida in Tampa“This could be a fusion of a plant and an animal — that’s just cool,”...
Diveboard updates: SAC and RMV calculations
by Ksso on May 03, 2012
Consumption rate can be expressed in equivalent terms of either pressure (SAC - Surface Air Consumption = PSI per minute or bar per minute) or volume (RMV - Respiratory Minute Volume = cubic feet per minute or liters per minute). Both of those numbers are important, and are used for different purposes.
RMV is used for dive planning
SAC is used for dive execution
Thanks to John and Jason on Diveboard's uservoice ideabox we now calculate properly both values and display them in your profile for each of your tanks. To get those calculations done, simply edit your dive, head to the "profile" tab, add one or many tanks and make sure you provide the volume and start/end pressures and you're good...
